September Is the Real New Year: Why Right Now Is the Best Time of Year for Fat Loss

You registered for the challenge. You built your Day 1 salad. You posted it and tagged us and felt that small but real sense of satisfaction that comes from doing the thing you said you were going to do.
That feeling? That is the beginning of something bigger than a salad.
Here is what I have watched happen every single year with people who complete this challenge. And here is the honest conversation I want to have about what wellness actually looks like – not just for 21 days, but for the months and years that follow.
The research on habit formation has a finding that does not get talked about enough: building one anchor habit in one area of your life tends to improve behavior in adjacent areas – without you consciously trying.
This is called the habit ripple effect. And it is one of the most compelling arguments for starting with something specific and achievable rather than overhauling everything at once.
When you commit to one intentional meal every day, something starts to happen around it. You start paying more attention to what goes in your body at other meals. You start noticing how food makes you feel – not in a guilt-based way, but in a genuinely curious way. You start making slightly better choices at breakfast because you are already in the mindset of someone who makes intentional choices.
The salad is the anchor. The ripple is everything else.
But here is what I want to be clear about: nutrition is one piece of a much bigger wellness picture. And the challenge is most powerful when you treat it as the entry point to that picture – not the whole thing.
At Complete Performance, we named ourselves the way we did intentionally.
Complete. Not partial. Not one-dimensional. Not “get in shape.”
Complete. And complete wellness – the kind that actually changes how you feel and how you live – is built on several pillars working together.
NUTRITION – which is where the challenge lives
The Big A$$ Salad Challenge is a nutrition intervention. A beautifully designed, community-supported, research-aligned nutrition intervention. But it is one piece.
The daily salad addresses anti-inflammatory eating, colorful produce intake, protein consistency, and fiber. It does not address every nutritional need you have. The point is to build the habit and the identity – someone who eats with intention – that carries into every other food decision you make.
MOVEMENT – the piece that compounds nutrition
Here is something that does not get said often enough: nutrition and movement work better together than either does alone.
Strength training in particular changes how your body uses the nutrients you are consuming. It preserves muscle mass, improves insulin sensitivity, and creates a metabolic environment in which what you eat actually gets used as fuel rather than stored. A daily salad full of nutrients is more effective in a body that is regularly being asked to do something with those nutrients.
If you are doing the challenge but not moving your body three times a week – this is the nudge. They compound each other.
SLEEP – the non-negotiable everyone negotiates
Nutrition can be perfect and movement can be consistent and sleep can still undo both of them.
During sleep, your body regulates hunger hormones – specifically ghrelin and leptin, which control appetite and satiety. When sleep is consistently short, ghrelin rises and leptin falls, which means you are hungrier, less satisfied when you eat, and more likely to reach for high-calorie, high-carbohydrate foods the next day.
You cannot out-salad poor sleep. Protect seven to nine hours like it is part of the challenge – because physiologically, it is.
STRESS – the silent variable
Cortisol, the primary stress hormone, directly influences fat storage, particularly in the abdominal region. It disrupts sleep. It increases appetite. It makes the anti-inflammatory work your salad is doing harder to sustain.
This is not a therapy conversation. It is a physiology conversation. Chronic stress is a wellness variable as real as nutrition and movement. Managing it – through whatever works for you: walking, training, connecting with people, stepping away from your phone – is not optional if the goal is complete health.
COMMUNITY – the one people underestimate most
The Big A$$ Salad Challenge is a community event on purpose.
Social connection and belonging are among the most well-documented contributors to long-term health outcomes. People with strong community connections live longer, experience fewer chronic diseases, and report higher quality of life across almost every measure.
You are not doing the challenge alone. The community is doing it together.
That experience – showing up alongside other people who are doing the same hard thing – is a wellness intervention in itself.
Do not underestimate what it means to have a room full of people cheering for your salad on Day 10 when you really do not feel like making it.
When 21 days of the challenge are done – when you finish on October 5th – here is what the research and what I have personally observed says happens to people who take it seriously:
The nutrition habit is set. The daily colorful, protein-rich, intentional meal is no longer something you have to think about. It is something you do.
Movement feels different. Because you have been fueling better for three weeks, your training sessions feel more productive. The connection between what you eat and how you perform becomes real and undeniable.
Sleep often improves. The anti-inflammatory diet, the reduced blood sugar swings from consistent eating, the daily movement – these all contribute to better sleep quality without you specifically targeting it.
You feel like a different version of yourself. Not because 21 days transforms your body completely. But because 21 days of doing something intentional every day changes how you see yourself and what you believe you are capable of.
That is the wellness picture. Not one salad. The whole thing.
If you are in the challenge – keep going. Show up tomorrow. Post your salad. Cheer for someone else. You are building something real.
If you want to layer in the movement piece, Strength Class at Complete Performance is open. Talk to Andy about semi-private strength training.
If you are navigating menopause and want the full nutrition and coaching framework, MenoStrong is available. If you are a fall sport athlete, Briannis building in-season programs around your schedule.
Complete wellness is not one thing. But one thing – done consistently, done with community – is how it starts.
You are already doing it.
