September Is the Real New Year: Why Right Now Is the Best Time of Year for Fat Loss

by | Lifestyle, Nutrition

Every year, millions of people wait for January.

They coast through September, October, November, and December telling themselves the holidays are too hard, that they will start fresh in the new year, that January is when things get real.

And then January arrives and they start from scratch – no momentum, no habits, no foundation – in the coldest, darkest, most motivation-depleted month of the year.

I want to make the case for a completely different approach.

September is the real new year. And right now – right this week – is one of the best moments in the entire calendar year to start building something that lasts.

Here is why. And here is exactly what to do about it.

THE ROUTINE ADVANTAGE

Fat loss is not primarily a nutrition problem or a fitness problem. It is a behavior problem.

Specifically, it is a consistency problem. And consistency is dramatically easier to build when your life has structure.

September brings structure back.

School schedules return. Work rhythms normalize after the summer chaos. The family calendar becomes predictable again. The irregular, spontaneous, hard-to-plan-around energy of summer gives way to something that actually supports habit formation: a repeatable week.

Compare this to January. January has the motivation – briefly – but it also has the weather, the post-holiday exhaustion, the depleted willpower from a month of indulgence, and the psychological weight of starting over after another year of not doing it.

September has the structure without the baggage.

You are not starting over in September. You are using the natural reset of a new season to build something on top of whatever foundation you already have.

That is a meaningfully different starting point.

THE TIMELINE ADVANTAGE

Here is the math that most people never do:

September through mid-December is approximately 14 weeks.

Fourteen weeks of consistent, intentional behavior – training three times per week, eating one genuinely nutritious meal per day, sleeping adequately, managing stress – produces real, measurable, lasting change.

The people who start in September arrive at the holidays feeling different. Not lighter by some dramatic number. Different. More energy. Clothes fitting differently. A relationship with food that is not characterized by guilt and restriction. Habits that are strong enough to survive a Thanksgiving dinner without unraveling.

The people who wait for January start from scratch in the new year – alongside every other person who made the same decision – with no runway of built habits beneath them.

Fourteen weeks is enough time to change how you eat, how you move, and how you feel about both. But only if you start now.

THE SEASONAL NUTRITION ADVANTAGE

This is the one most people have never considered.

The produce available right now – late summer and early fall – is among the most nutritionally dense, anti-inflammatory, hormone-supportive food available all year.

Dark leafy greens at peak season. Tomatoes at their best. Cucumbers, bell peppers, corn.

Cruciferous vegetables – broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, cabbage – coming into their prime as temperatures drop. Root vegetables beginning to appear at farmers markets.

This is not a coincidence of timing. These are exactly the foods that support blood sugar management, gut health, estrogen metabolism, and inflammation reduction. The same nutritional categories we have been talking about all summer in the context of what actually moves the needle for women in midlife.

Eating for fat loss and eating what is seasonally available right now are almost perfectly aligned.

January does not have this. January has root vegetables and storage crops. September has everything.

THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ADVANTAGE

There is a reason school supply shopping feels exciting even for people who have not been in school for 20 years. September carries a psychological freshness that January simply does not have.

It is the energy of starting something. Of turning a page. Of deciding that this chapter is going to look different from the last one.

That energy is real and it is usable. The question is whether you use it – or whether you acknowledge it exists and then wait four more months until January when it is completely gone.

The women I have coached who get the most meaningful results are not the ones with the most willpower. They are the ones who use the windows when the conditions are genuinely favorable.

September is one of those windows. It might be the best one all year.

THE BIG A$$ SALAD CHALLENGE IS YOUR STARTING POINT

Everything above  – the routine, the timeline, the seasonal produce, the psychological reset – is the reason we launched the Big A$$ Salad Challenge starting September 14th.

We did not pick September at random. We picked it because the conditions are right. Because the produce is exceptional (and to a far lesser degree making so many people sick). Because the routines have returned. Because 21 days of intentional, daily, community-supported eating starting now puts you in exactly the right place for the final stretch of the year.

Here is what the challenge does inside that context:

It gives the September momentum a specific target. Instead of a vague intention to “eat better,” you have a daily commitment that is concrete, measurable, and supported by a community.

It builds the one-meal habit in exactly the way the research says works – through repetition, community accountability, and a timeline long enough to create real behavioral change.

It uses the best produce of the year. Your daily salad is not a compromise. It is the most nutritionally dense, anti-inflammatory, seasonally aligned meal you could build right now.

And it connects you to a group of people who are doing the exact same thing at the exact same time – which is the single most powerful factor in whether a habit sticks.

HOW TO JOIN

Registration is open now and closes September 13th at midnight.

The challenge starts September 14th and runs for 21 days through October 5th.

What you need: motivation to show up for 21 days, access to a farmers market or grocery store, and a bowl big enough to mean business.

What you get: the habit, the community, the accountability, the prize opportunity, and the experience of arriving at the end of October having built something real.

REGISTER FOR THE BIG A$$ SALAD CHALLENGE NOW!

Registration closes in days. Do not wait until Monday to decide.

January is coming whether you are ready or not. The question is whether you want to arrive

there having spent 14 weeks building something – or having spent 14 weeks waiting.

September is the real new year.

The Big A$$ Salad Challenge is the starting point.

Registration closes September 13th. The challenge starts September 14th.

We will see you there.
