Consistency Wins – But Not the Version You’ve Been Sold

by | Uncategorized

Ask most people what consistency means in fitness and you’ll get some version of the same answer: showing up every single day, never missing a workout, never going off plan, never having a bad week.

That version of consistency exists in theory. It does not exist in real life.

Real life has travel, sick kids, long work weeks, social events, bad nights of sleep, and days where everything that could go wrong does. The person who has never missed a workout has either never had a real life, or is not being honest with you.

So let’s talk about what consistency actually is – and why the version the fitness industry sells you is one of the main reasons people keep starting over.

THE CONSISTENCY MYTH

The myth goes something like this: if you are truly committed, you will never miss a day. A missed workout is a failure. A bad food week means you fell off. And if you fall off, you have to start over.

This is not a philosophy that produces results. It is a philosophy that produces a restart cycle.

We see it constantly. Someone starts strong, builds momentum, hits a hard week – a work trip, a family obligation, a bout of illness – misses a few days and decides, consciously or not, that they have failed the program. So they stop. And two weeks later they start again. And the cycle repeats.

The cruelest part of this pattern is that the person stuck in it often has plenty of dedication. They keep starting, which takes real effort. The problem is not their commitment. The problem is that they have been handed a definition of consistency that no sustainable program can survive contact with real life.

WHAT CONSISTENCY ACTUALLY IS

Consistency is not a perfect attendance record. It is a direction.

More specifically, it is the repeated return to a behavior over time – with enough frequency and enough continuity that the behavior becomes part of who you are, rather than something you are doing.

There is a meaningful difference between those two things.

When training is something you are doing, a missed week is a rupture. The program is the thing, and without it, there is nothing to hold onto.

When training is part of who you are, a missed week is just a missed week. You come back because coming back is what you do. The habit has become identity, and identity is much more durable than motivation.

That shift – from behavior to identity – does not happen overnight. But it also does not require a perfect record to get there. It requires showing up enough, for long enough, that the pattern becomes yours.

THE NUMBER THAT ACTUALLY MATTERS

Here is a reframe that changes how most of our clients think about consistency:

It is not about how often you show up during your best weeks. It is about how quickly you come back after your worst ones.

A client who trains four days a week, every week, for twelve weeks has done something remarkable. But so has the client who trains three days most weeks, misses a full week in week six because of a work deadline, and comes right back in week seven without treating the setback as a reason to restart.

The second client’s result over twelve weeks is not dramatically different from the first. Their consistency score, measured in perfect attendance, is lower. Their consistency score, measured in return rate, is just as high.

That is the number worth tracking.

WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE ACROSS THE CP PROGRAMS

This principle shows up differently depending on what you are working on – but it holds across all of it.

FOR STRESS-FREE FAT LOSS REMOTE COACHING CLIENTS

The clients who get the best results with Jordan are not the ones who have perfect weeks. They are the ones who have a system for imperfect weeks.

That means knowing what the minimum looks like – the two things you will do no matter what – and protecting those even when everything else gets squeezed. It means treating a rough Wednesday as data, not as a verdict. And it means having a coach who helps you come back on Thursday instead of waiting for Monday.

FOR STRENGTH CLASS MEMBERS

In Strength Class, consistency compounds in a way that is genuinely hard to replicate any other way. The members who have been in the room for six months look and move and feel completely different from when they started – not because any single session was transformative, but because sixty sessions were.

Miss a week. Come back. That is still sixty sessions in six months.

FOR FALL SPORT ATHLETES

For Brian’s athletes, consistency in summer is not optional – it is a competitive variable. The athlete who trains consistently through July, misses a week in early August, and comes back to finish the summer block still arrives at preseason in a completely different place than the one who never started.

The mistake we see is athletes who miss one week and treat it as permission to miss the rest of the summer. One week is recoverable. A decision to stop is not.

The window is still open. Come back.

THE THING NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT STARTING OVER

Here is something worth sitting with: the people who are stuck in the restart cycle are not failing because they lack discipline. They are failing because they are measuring the wrong thing.

They are measuring perfection. And perfection, by definition, ends the moment anything goes wrong.

Measure return rate instead. Measure direction. Measure how many times, after a hard week, you came back without making it mean something about your character or your capability.

That is the consistency that wins. Not the kind that never bends – the kind that never stays broken.

If you are someone who has been starting and stopping for a while, we want you to hear this clearly: there is nothing wrong with you. You have been playing by the wrong rules.

The right ones are simpler. Show up when you can. Come back when you can’t. Keep the direction.

That is it. That is consistency. And it wins every time.
